Amar Artanad makes for strange viewing. Part drama, part whodunit and part social commentary, it straddles genres. But, just like a child in a candy store, the director (Sujit Paul) cannot decide which flavour he likes the most. At its core, it is a film on the problems with the judicial system when it comes to addressing sensitive issues like child sexual abuse. Arpita Chatterjee plays Nilanjana, a lawyer, who is called by Amitabh (Joy Sengupta) and Moushumi (Arpita Mukherjee) after their daughter, Riya, comes home from school one day totally traumatised and shaken. The parents find out that she has been abused during a physical education class. Nilanjana, having a child of her own of similar age, sympathises with them and takes on the case readily. Will she succeed?
